Kalamazoo, MICH — Kalamazoo businessman Nick Zafer officially stepped into the role of director of the Board of Consumers Credit Union effective December 2018.

He fills the vacated term left by Brad Lawton, longtime chairman who retired at the end of 2018, after 14 years of service.

“Brad was instrumental in pushing our organization forward through new technology, new markets and even into our new headquarters,” said Kit Snyder, CEO and president. “He will sorely be missed, but we feel fortunate to have such a passionate replacement in Nick. I can’t wait for the good things ahead of us.”

Zafer is owner and general manager of TeamLogic IT based in Kalamazoo. The nearly 10-year-old company provides comprehensive computer services, including support and consulting for businesses of all sizes.

Though a longtime member, Zafer became interested in the workings of the Credit Union when introduced to several other board members while helping with then Volunteer Kalamazoo (now Gryphon Place).

“I met Brad [Lawton] and current Director Kim Shook, and they had a lot of great things to say about what Consumers was doing to better the lives of members in the community,” Zafer said. “When a vacancy came up on the Board, I was happy to serve.”

Zafer has been an associate [non-voting] director since 2014, and is motivated to keep up the tremendous growth pattern Consumers has set for itself.

The Credit Union, formed in 1951, now serves more than 93,000 members through 20 offices across West Michigan. Last July, it eclipsed the $1 billion asset mark and just recently celebrated its first year in its new 92,000-square-foot corporate headquarters.

“I’m very excited about how Consumers is simplifying the way members bank how and where they want,” Zafer said. “I am honored to serve as our newest director and feel the tremendous responsibility it leaves me to be a voice for our members.”
