Consumers Credit Union Awards $75,000 to Support Affordable Housing Initiatives in Battle Creek
Kalamazoo, Mich. — Consumers Credit Union is proud to announce it will award $37,500 each to S.A.F.E. Place and Neighborhoods Inc. of Battle Creek (NIBC) via the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis’ Community Multiplier – Member Match program.
Community Multiplier – Member Match is a matching grant program available to financial institution members of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBank Indianapolis). The program offers grants of up to $60,000 each with a minimum 25% matching commitment from the member financial institution to target specific affordable housing initiatives. Each grant provides $30,000 from FHLBI, with an additional $7,500 match from Consumers.
“We [Consumers Credit Union] believe safe, stable housing creates stronger families and stronger communities,” said Josh Summerfield, vice president of mortgages at Consumers. “We’re proud to partner with S.A.F.E. Place and Neighborhoods Inc. of Battle Creek through the Community Multiplier program to help address critical housing needs and create more opportunities for individuals and families to thrive.”

S.A.F.E. Place
The grant awarded to S.A.F.E. Place will support the construction of five apartment-style housing units for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. Located on S.A.F.E. Place’s existing property, the units will provide longer-term emergency housing for individuals and families who need additional time and support before transitioning to permanent housing. The project will help bridge the gap between emergency shelter and permanent housing while allowing residents to remain connected to supportive services.
“Emergency shelter is meant to be a first step, but many survivors need more time before they’re ready for a place of their own,” said Ellen Lassiter Collier, CEO of S.A.F.E. Place. “These five apartments give families room to rest, plan and rebuild while staying close to the support they count on. We’re grateful to Consumers Credit Union and FHLBank Indianapolis for helping us add them.”
The grant awarded to Neighborhoods Inc. of Battle Creek will support the organization’s housing rehabilitation initiative, which works to revitalize aging residential properties and increase the supply of safe, affordable housing throughout Battle Creek and Calhoun County. Funding will be used for critical rehabilitation projects, including roofing, mechanical systems, electrical and plumbing upgrades, accessibility improvements, and health and safety repairs. These investments will help preserve existing affordable housing and return vacant or distressed properties to productive use.

Neighborhoods Inc of Battle Creek (NIBC)
“A bad roof or a broken furnace can put a family’s whole home at risk,” said President and CEO of Neighborhoods Inc. of Battle Creek Whitney Wardell. “This funding helps us make the repairs that keep homes safe and livable, and bring empty properties back into use on streets that need them. We appreciate Consumers Credit Union and FHLBank Indianapolis for investing in Battle Creek neighborhoods.”
Together, these projects will help expand housing stability, preserve affordable housing inventory and strengthen neighborhoods across the Battle Creek community.
