Low- and no-cost ways to make your home attractive to buyers.

Listing your house for sale doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a lot of money to make it attractive to buyers. A few simple tasks can go a long way toward enticing buyers.

Declutter every space

Often the very things that make a house feel like home are the things that tend to accumulate. An excess of family photos, décor and personal items can make it difficult for potential buyers to imagine making your house their new home. Clear away the clutter.

When decluttering, it may be tempting to store things in closets. However, a jam-packed closet makes it look like your home has limited storage space. Sell or giveaway what you no longer need. Box up the things you can’t part with and put them in storage if necessary.

Declutter every space in your home, from the kitchen cupboards and bedrooms to the basement and garage.

Clear the dust

Even a clean home can accumulate dust, yet buyers aren’t likely to distinguish between dust and dirt. Thoroughly wipe away the dust from every surface, including ceiling fan blades, along woodwork, in corners and where walls meet the ceiling and floors.

Clean high touch areas

Many of us don’t even see the grime that builds up in high-touch areas like light switches and doorknobs. Go through your house and make sure all these areas are free of fingerprints and dirt.

Make windows shine

Clean windows help make a good impression as they let in more light and enhance the view of the outdoors. A thorough cleaning is in order here, including the glass, tracks and screens.

Make sure all lights work

When showing your home, you’ll want to to leave the lights on to make it feel welcome. Make sure all indoor and outdoor lights are working. If an area seems particularly dim, consider installing brighter bulbs.

Decluttering, cleaning, and filling your home with light are simple things that will make your home look well-kept and inviting to prospective buyers.
