How Volunteers Help Strengthen Our Community

Consumers Credit Union believes in the power of people helping people. That’s why we’re proud to highlight the incredible impact volunteers have through local organizations like Milestone Senior Services. In 2024 alone, Milestone engaged 363 volunteers who contributed more than 32,700 hours of service—an inspiring testament to the strength of community support.
Programs such as Nutrition Services (Home Delivered Meals), Senior Companion and the Home Repair & Accessibility (Ramp) Program rely heavily on volunteer involvement to serve older adults and individuals with disabilities across Southwest Michigan.
Flexible, Meaningful Ways to Give Back
Volunteering with Milestone is simple and flexible. Whether you have a few hours a week or just a little time to spare, there’s a role for you. Some volunteers prefer a regular schedule, while others help out as their availability allows. No matter your schedule, your time makes a real difference. Consumers sends a dedicated volunteer every Tuesday to help with meal delivery.
Where Volunteers Are Needed Most
- Home Delivered Meals: Volunteers deliver nutritious meals across 27 routes in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties, Monday through Friday. Each route ideally includes a driver and a “hopper”, someone who brings meals to the door and offers a friendly greeting. For many recipients, this is the only personal interaction they may have all day.
- Senior Companion Program: Volunteers aged 55+ are matched with older adults who benefit from companionship. These one-on-one relationships offer emotional support and friendship. Sponsored by AmeriCorps Seniors, this program also provides a stipend for income-qualified volunteers.
- Ramp Program: Volunteers help build and install entry ramps for individuals with mobility challenges. Whether you’re a retired tradesperson or new to tools, there’s a place for you on the team. Pre-built ramp sections make on-site installation efficient and collaborative.
Additional Opportunities
Milestone also welcomes volunteers to assist with:
- Packaging pet food for clients with furry companions
- Kitchen prep and support
- Occasional office tasks
If you’re 55 or older, you may also qualify for AmeriCorps RSVP, which connects volunteers to opportunities across the community and offers additional benefits.
