Ideas for recognizing and motivating your team on Employee Appreciation Day and beyond.

Officially, Employee Appreciation Day is the first Friday in March, but you don’t have to limit your appreciation to just one day! Here are several ways to recognize your employees’ efforts any time throughout the year.

Take a field trip

Remember the anticipation of field trips when you were a kid? Adults enjoy outings, too!

Arrange to take your team to a sporting event; a community festival; on a day trip to a big(ger) city like Grand Rapids, Chicago or Detroit; or to see a special exhibit like Butterflies Are Blooming at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Declare the bus ride to and from your destination a work-free zone where no one talks about work or checks their email.

Cater a meal

It’s easy for most of us to fall into a lunch rut. The same old soup, sandwich or frozen meal every day. Shake up the routine and treat everyone to a catered lunch.

Alternatively, you could cater breakfast. To make it extra-special, hire a chef who makes omelets and waffles to order.

Play games

Set aside time for fun and games for a break and to build camaraderie. Games like Monopoly, Uno and Apples to Apples can provide opportunities for people to take their minds off work and get to know each other better.

If your team would like something more hands-on, try a Jenga tournament. Or, host a Lego building contest. Award prizes for complexity and originality, and use of color.

Have a taste of something yummy

Tastings are a good way to try something new and spark conversations.

Bring in a gourmet selection of coffee and tea, chocolates, or any other foods your team loves. Here are links to help you get started:

Support employees’ financial health

Another way to show your employees appreciation is to look out for their financial health. You can help your employees save, reduce debt and discuss loan options through our Consumers @Work program.
