Protecting a widow from getting scammed

Earlier this year, a widow named Monika* came into Berger Chevrolet upset about phone calls she had been receiving. The caller claimed to be from Consumers Credit Union. He told Monika that because her husband, Jack* had passed away, she needed to turn in her vehicle and sign off on the title. When Berger Chevrolet Finance Manager Greg Naki heard this, he knew it didn’t sound right. What did he do? He took action right then and there.

Greg picked up the phone and called Consumers. As he suspected, Consumers wasn’t behind the calls. In fact, the caller was a scammer using information from Jack’s obituary to prey on Monika. In short order, Greg was able to reassure Monika that her Consumers loan was in good standing, and she had no reason to fear repossession.

General Sales Manager Jeremy Rhoton says this is just one example of how their staff tries to help everyone before, during and after they purchase a car.

Protecting customers’ health

Covid-19 has changed how all business gets done and, for Berger Chevrolet, this means looking out for customers’ health more than ever.

In response to the pandemic, Jeremy said new sanitation procedures have been put in place. When cars are returned from test drives, they are sprayed with disinfectant. When staff delivers a vehicle to someone’s home, Berger Chevrolet’s driver uses a portable system to disinfect the car after they deliver it.

Another move Berger Chevrolet made to protect customers’ health is with the adoption of electronic documents.

“People can come in to the dealership or not,” Jeremy said. “We’ve gone to digital signatures for all documents.” People can sign at home or, if they’re at the dealership, they can sign in the showroom without having to go into the confines of an office.

A versatile service department

Every vehicle needs maintenance to keep it running reliably as long as possible.
