Consumers Credit Union Commissions Mural Celebrating South Haven
South Haven, Mich. — Consumers Credit Union has commissioned renowned Michigan muralist Kevin Wolfrom to create an approximately 60-foot-wide mural at its downtown South Haven office, adding a bold new piece of public art to one of Lake Michigan’s most visited waterfront communities.
Wolfrom will begin painting the mural Monday, May 4, 2026, with plans to complete the project in approximately one week, weather permitting. The mural will feature a postcard-style interpretation of “South Haven,” paired with a ground-level rendering of the iconic South Haven lighthouse, designed specifically to invite interactive selfies and group photos from residents and visitors alike.
“South Haven has such a strong visual identity: the lake, the light, the sense of history mixed with summer energy,” said Wolfrom. “I love creating murals that have purpose and intention—work that brings forth a sense of connection the community can tap into.”
The South Haven lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Black River and first lit in 1872, is one of Michigan’s most photographed maritime landmarks and a longstanding symbol of the city’s identity as a Lake Michigan destination.
Consumers Credit Union selected Wolfrom for the project based on his track record of creating community-centered murals across Michigan, particularly in Grand Rapids and West Michigan. A graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design, Wolfrom is known for vibrant color palettes, bold linework and themes that blend local storytelling with contemporary style.
“This mural represents our commitment to investing in the places where our members live, work and gather,” said Scott Sylvester, Consumers’ president and CEO. “Public art has a unique ability to spark pride and encourage connection. Partnering with a Michigan-based artist to celebrate South Haven felt like a natural fit.”
Consumers’ South Haven offices manager, Ken Overholser, added, “As a local credit union, this mural is just another way we’re investing in downtown—creating an attraction that draws visitors in and gives them a reason to explore our local shops, restaurants and attractions. It’s really fitting that the mural will be painted during South Haven Business Week.” The South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce will celebrate National Small Business Week, May 3-9.
Once completed, the mural is expected to become a new visual landmark in downtown South Haven, complementing the city’s walkable retail district and vibrant seasonal tourism scene.
