TellerPlus+ stations in Drive Thrus Enable Consumers Credit Union to Serve Members Remotely, Safely During COVID-19 Crisis

Kalamazoo, MICH — Consumers Credit Union is taking a number of measures to serve members impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

Most uniquely, however, is its use of TellerPlus+ stations (interactive tellers) in all the drive thrus of its offices.

“Banks and credit unions have been using drive-thru tubes for over 50 years. Last year, we replaced the dated technology with TellerPlus+ stations,” said CEO & President Kit Snyder. “These machines serve as 24/7 ATMs and give extended hour access to live tellers from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday.”

The decision has allowed Consumers to continue to serve its members while not initiating physical contact during those transactions.

“We are very pleased that we can continue to serve our 100,000+ members and protect them and our employees during these challenging times of COVID-19.”

In addition to the extended hours, members can receive printed receipts with check images and a variety of cash denominations, including $5s through the ATM side.

Beyond the available technology, Consumers has deferral programs available for those struggling to make mortgage and business loan payments, and has relaxed its guidelines around its Skip A Pay* program, including the following features:

  • may be used on most vehicle loans, recreational loans, unsecured personal loans (and this is new!)—credit cards and repayment accounts, though certain loans may be ineligible;
  • may be made every 30 days; and
  • may be requested without incurring a processing fee.

Consumers also recommends the use of self-service tools, such as Online Banking through desktop or mobile app and voice access banking options.

Members needing financial assistance to make payments should call 800.991.2221, connect with Consumers online or make an appointment at select offices.

Business banking members are asked to reach out to a commercial loan officer directly.

*Interest will continue to accrue during the deferment period. Deferment of payment will extend the life of the loan and may cause an increase in the final payment amount. Offer only available on CONSUMER qualifying loans (excluding: home equities, mortgages, credit cards, lines of credit, MI Saves and merchant loans, Share secured CD secured and repayment accounts) currently financed with Consumers Credit Union with a maximum of six extensions allowed during the term of the loan, and no prior extensions within the last 90 days. Limit of two extensions per rolling 12-month period. Loans must be current and all accounts in good standing. If your auto loan has GAP insurance, please contact your insurance carrier to determine how a Skip A Payment may affect your coverage. If your loan is protected by other insurance, it may be ineligible. Offer subject to approval and does not apply to the first payment of any loan. The fee to skip a payment is $25 for loans originated in Indiana. For all others, the fee is $40 for loan payments less than $500; and $50 for loan payments greater than $500.
