Trained service technicians can help reduce costs and hassles.
With higher costs for everything from utilities to raw materials, it may seem like a good idea to attempt doing repairs on commercial equipment yourself. However, there are three risks to the DIY approach for businesses.
The warranty may be voided
Manufacturers of everything from commercial pizza ovens and HVAC systems to vehicles and electronics require repairs to be made by certified servicers to keep the warranty in force. If you or an employee perform repairs, you could void the warranty.
Considering the purchase cost and, often, commercial equipment loan obligations for business equipment, it’s wise to keep warranties in force. Know your equipment manufacturer’s warranty requirements before reaching for the repair tools.
An attempted repair may create more problems
Many people pride themselves on their MacGyver abilities to get troublesome equipment operating. However, jerry-riggers overlook two drawbacks to taking matters into their own hands. First, the original problem may be obscured by their repair attempt and, second, the improvised fix may cause more damage. When you do call in a professional later, troubleshooting will take longer and result in a higher bill.
Safety considerations
One servicer of restaurant equipment says, “Just because it works doesn’t mean it works properly.” Equipment that’s improperly installed or repaired can result in fire, explosion or a buildup of toxic gases or smoke.
When needed, call a trained technician for your equipment repairs. You’ll keep the warranty in force, get the job done right and keep your employees and customers safe.
P.S. Don’t overlook regular equipment maintenance that can reduce overall costs and hassles due to breakdowns.
