Every drop of water saved can decrease your utility costs.

As West Michigan municipalities face big bills for improving infrastructure, price increases have ultimately been passed along to homeowners. While you can’t change the rate you pay for water, there are many ways to cut back on your household use. Here are seven ways to help keep your water bill as low as possible.

Repair leaks

Dripping faucets, running toilets and leaking sprinkler systems waste your water and run up the bill. As soon as leaks are noticed, repair them.

Replace old toilets

According to Energy Star, replacing an older toilet with a newer one that has the WaterSense label can save a family of four 16,000 gallons of water each year.

Alternatively, you can improve the water efficiency of an older toilet by reducing how much water is used to fill the tank. Grab a plastic bottle and fill it with sand or pebbles to weigh it down, then replace the cap. Place the bottle in the tank of the toilet, making sure the bottle doesn’t interfere with the flushing mechanism.

Run full loads only

Only run the dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load. Unless you have exceptionally dirty dishes or clothes, consider skipping extra rinse cycles.

Sweep, don’t spray

To keep sidewalks and driveways clear, use a broom rather than spraying away dirt with a garden hose.

Collect rainwater

Rain barrels help protect your budget by collecting rain freely supplied by Mother Nature. If you automatically think “ugly” when you see the words “rain barrel,” do a quick Google search for “decorative rain barrels” and you’ll see options that are aesthetically pleasing. Some even incorporate planters and fountains!

Replace old faucets and showerheads—or their aerators

When replacing old faucets and showerheads, look for the WaterSense label. Low-flow faucets and showerheads with the WaterSense designation can reduce water use by 30% to 50%.

Another way to reduce water use at the tap is by replacing the aerator. You can find a pack of these screw-on components for less than $10 that will fit most kitchen and bath faucets.

Water lawns and gardens early in the day

Timing irrigation of your lawn and garden can help lower your water bill. Water early in the morning so more water is accessible to plants and less is lost to evaporation.
