This free service helps homeowners avoid damaging underground utilities when digging.

Did you know that even hand digging can result in damage to underground utilities? In Michigan, over 25% of the damage to underground lines each year is caused by homeowners hand digging or using excavation equipment in their yards. Sometimes the damage leads to service outages for the homeowners as well as their whole neighborhood. Hitting a line could also lead to serious injury. That’s why it’s important to locate underground service lines for natural gas, electricity, cable and phone before you dig. Finding out where the lines are is easy and free with MISS DIG 811.

What’s MISS DIG 811?

MISS DIG 811 is a public service that sends utility representatives to your property to locate and mark underground lines. Paint lines and/or flags used by the utility locators will show exactly where underground utilities—like electric, gas and cable lines—are buried.
There’s no cost to homeowners to use MISS DIG 811. And it’s required by law that you use MISS DIG 811 before you start digging. If you skip calling MISS DIG 811 and cause utility damage, you could get a costly fine—up to $5,000.
