7 ways every driver can maximize fuel efficiency.

Rising crude oil prices have driven the cost gasoline across the country to record highs. Since many of us rely on personal vehicles to travel to work, school and various other places, paying more at the pump can cause household budgets to tighten. Here are a few ways to conserve fuel and get more mileage from every tank of gas.

Drive smart

Adhering to the speed limit, avoiding rapid acceleration and braking and removing excess weight will all help maximize gas mileage. Consider removing things such as roof racks and cargo boxes that create drag and interfere with your vehicle’s aerodynamics.

Avoid long periods of idling

Any time your car idles you are getting zero miles per gallon. Avoid excessive idling while sitting in traffic jams, waiting in drive-through lanes, and other times when your vehicle is not in motion. Simply turn off the engine until it’s time to move. If possible, avoid traveling at rush hour when you’re most likely to get stuck in standstill traffic.

Check tire pressure

Over time, tires lose pressure. It’s not uncommon for tires to lose about 1 psi each month, which can drag down fuel economy and lead to premature tire wear. Consistently monitor tire pressure to ensure all four tires are inflated to the proper pressure.

Maintain your vehicle

A well-maintained vehicle performs more efficiently. Make sure to get regular oil and filter changes, as well as air filter changes to maximize fuel efficiency.

Pay attention to windows and AC

Open windows and sunroofs create drag that can cause fuel economy to suffer while traveling at high speeds. Running the air conditioner also diminishes gas mileage; limit its use to when it’s absolutely necessary.

Various factors affect when to use the AC or open windows, including the weather, type of vehicle and the intensity of the sun. Check out these U.S. Department of Energy tips for maximizing fuel economy in hot weather.

Plan ahead

Minimize driving by running errands on a single day. Make sure to plan the most efficient route.

Check prices before you fill up

Apps and websites such as GasBuddy show gas prices in real time. Use these services to find the lowest prices along your route.
