YouTube’s rollout of handles means it’s easier for people to easily find and engage with your content. Here are a few things you should know.

How handles work

YouTube @handles are similar to those used on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. Your handle will also become part of your channel URL. For example, if your handle is @user123, your channel URL would be https://youtube.com/@user123.

Having a YouTube account doesn’t necessarily equate to having a channel. If you want to use YouTube handles, you need to establish a channel where you can upload video content.

How handles can help bolster your marketing

In addition to helping others easily find you on YouTube, handles can help you connect with others within the YouTube community and get more notice from being tagged in full-length videos or shorts, videos in vertical format that are less than one minute long and usually created on a smartphone. Handles will appear in the shorts tab, search results, comments and mentions.

When can you choose a handle?

YouTube is gradually rolling out the new handles feature. However, if you already have a personalized YouTube URL, it will automatically become your handle, with the option to choose a different handle if you prefer.

How to choose a handle

Like other social media monikers, your YouTube @handle should be unique, help identify you and/or your business and help others find your content. YouTube does reserve the right to reject any handle that doesn’t meet its guidelines.
