We love perusing Pinterest for gorgeous home renovation ideas. Replicating most of them would require a good chunk of change—but updating your home doesn’t have to cost a lot. Small projects can pay off in a big way. Here are some of our favorite ideas for saving money on your next remodel. Hint: It’s often about repurposing what you already have.

“New” Cabinets

Want to give your kitchen a facelift? Replacing your cabinets can give it a whole new look, but you don’t have to go that far. If you’re not fond of the wood, you can hire a professional to resurface them by applying a veneer to the cabinet boxes and adding doors to match. Or opt to repaint them yourself. Even just adding new hardware, like handles and drawer pulls can be enough to give them the style you’re looking for.

Look-alike Materials

If you love the look of granite, for instance, but aren’t enthused about the price, there are many nice laminate options on the market today. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even find DIY tutorials on repainting existing countertops to look like granite.

Change Your Curtains

If you like to change up a room’s look often, curtains are an easy way to make that happen. You don’t need tools, and there’s no paint mess to clean up. On a similar note, a new shower curtain gives your bathroom an immediate image boost.

Work Arounds

For more extensive renovations, especially in the bathroom and kitchen, planning around your existing plumbing and wiring will help keep costs from getting out of hand. It can cost up to $2,000 to move a sink!

Go for Classic not Trendy

Trends come and go—but you want to enjoy your home’s new look for more than a season. More traditional styles are also often cheaper, so you save money on the purchase and get more use out of them.
