In some cases, it makes sense to choose a car that’s been in an accident—here’s how to decide.

If you’re having a tough time finding an affordable used car, you might wonder, “Should I buy a car with an accident history?” While there’s no simple answer, here are factors to help you decide.

All accidents are not equal

Today’s car buyers have access to valuable information through services like CARFAX. With the vehicle identification number (VIN), you can look up a car’s history that includes things like insurance claims for accidents.

A minor fender-bender isn’t likely to affect the long-term performance of the car. However, a history of flood damage or alignment issues from a major collision could mean major problems ahead.

Be wary of salvage title vehicles

When an insurance company deems accident damage so extensive that it’s a total loss, the vehicle may remain in service with a salvage title. The extent of damage means this is a higher risk vehicle for safety and reliability. Plus, it will cost more to finance and insure a salvage car.

Get an independent professional opinion

A seller will always try to make a car look as good as possible. Most of us don’t have the expertise to accurately assess a car’s condition with a visual inspection and test drive. To balance the equation, hire a licensed mechanic to do a damage inspection.

An expert will be able to assess the quality of post-accident repairs and what problems might arise down the road.

Financing a car with an accident history

It’s not unusual to get an auto loan for a used car, even if it has an accident history. Check out our auto loan calculator to see what price and monthly payment fit your budget.
