How this RN became the go-to trainer for physicians and built a thriving aesthetics practice

A deeper level of understanding of facial anatomy and a talent for training are the keys to Cathy Uecker’s success.

Registered Nurse Cathy Uecker’s skill with injectable cosmetic fillers and neurotoxins is so advanced that she built a thriving aesthetics practice based solely on word-of-mouth referrals and medical professionals seek her out for training.

How she got so good

How did she get so good at injectables and become a highly-sought trainer? In 2008, she attended an educational seminar that showed how different facial anatomy really was from the way it was presented in anatomy books at the time.

“The presentation of the work, which was done by plastic surgeon and facial anatomist Dr. Joel Pessa, changed my career path,” Cathy said. After the training session, I contacted him to ask more questions. He took me under his wing and said, ‘I’ll teach you.’”

Through Dr. Pessa’s training, Cathy gained a deeper understanding of facial anatomy. He taught her exactly where to inject (and where NOT to inject) dermal fillers and neurotoxins for the best possible outcomes. Together, they dissected cadavers, and Cathy saw firsthand that anatomy—up close and personal—is very different from the books she and others have learned from.

Over the years, Dr. Pessa has continued to mentor Cathy, always responding to her calls and texts about anatomy questions.

Forging her own path

For years, Cathy treated clients and trained other professionals for a corporation. However, she grew dissatisfied with the firm’s desire for what she describes as “cookie cutter techniques that lead to poor outcomes and unsafe injections.”

Cathy left the firm in 2012 and started her own training company to teach physicians and nurses about anatomy and how to safely inject for the best possible outcome.

“I am very honored to have trained many other physicians, RNs and dentists,” she said.

At the same time, Cathy continued working at a plastic surgery practice in Grand Rapids because she says “you have to practice what you preach.”

Around 2016, Cathy’s husband, Bill, floated the idea of opening an aesthetics practice. It would not be the couple’s first foray into business ownership. From 1999-2002, the couple co-owned a med-spa in Lansing with a plastic surgeon.

Cathy agreed to start the new business if, and only if, they could find a location between their home in Cascade and the freeway.

She had very clear ideas about work/life balance, too.

“I wanted to own the business, not have the business own me,” she said. Cathy and Bill have five children, ages 20 -41; “Yours, mine, and ours,” she joked.

After looking at several properties, Cathy found the perfect space with all the amenities she required for Simply the Best Aesthetics and Training Center. Most important, it was in the right location, between her home and the freeway in Cascade.

Now, Simply the Best Aesthetics goes beyond injections and training. Also on staff are Deidra DeHaan, a professional makeup artist and esthetician who provides skincare services, and Julie Martin, an esthetician who does eyelash extensions and permanent makeup.

How Cathy chose Consumers

At the time of Simply the Best’s official opening in September 2017, Cathy had set up all her business accounts at Consumers. She learned about Consumers the same way her clients learn about her: word-of-mouth.

When her son graduated from high school in 2015, he received a gift certificate for $100 when he opened an account at Consumers. Soon after, everyone in their household had opened checking, savings and credit card accounts with Consumers.

“I love this credit union!” Cathy said. “It feels like they’re your friend and they are on your team. Cascade Office Manager Stephanie Stacey keeps me in the loop and makes banking a fantastic experience.”

“It has been an amazing experience to see Cathy’s vision for her business truly come to life,” said Stacey. “I know how much Cathy loves what she does, so being able to see her passion pay off is so exciting.”

We’re proud to be on your team, Cathy!
