Peak storm season in Michigan goes from late March through early September but severe weather can happen any time. It’s not unusual for rising water, felled trees and wind-blown debris to damage vehicles. If any of these things happen to your car, here’s what you need to know about insurance coverage and starting a claim.
Does car insurance cover storm damage?
If your auto policy includes comprehensive insurance storm damage is likely covered as long as there was no negligence. Forgot to close the windows? Insurance won’t cover the water damage. Flying debris broke the window and water came in? That’ll be covered.
Keep in mind that if there’s extensive damage, the insurer may declare the car a total loss. In this case, their payment will be determined by the vehicle’s actual cash value before the damage occurred. The car’s model, age and mileage will affect its value.
Some vehicle owners erroneously believe comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of replacement. If you want replacement coverage, this must be purchased as an add-on to your policy. It will add about 5% to your premium. Only some insurers offer new car replacement so you may need to shop around.
What to do when your car is damaged
Remember safety comes first when assessing storm damage. Before you approach the car, survey the area for hazards such as downed power lines or fallen tree limbs that could shift and cause injury.
When conditions are safe, document the damage and report the event to your insurer. Take pictures and videos; note the date and time. If there was water damage, indicate how high the water rose.
If you’re not certain the car is safe to drive, leave it where it is. When the insurer’s claims adjustor is on site, they can determine if it’s drivable and the next steps.
What to do before a storm
You don’t want to be faced with storm damage to your car and the realization that your insurance policy doesn’t cover your claim. Review your auto policy now to see if your coverage is adequate.
