If you’re the type of person who’s literally ready to dig in around your home, you need to take one simple step before breaking ground on your next project. Contact MISS DIG 811 to have underground utilities marked to avoid serious injury, costly repairs and legal trouble.
What is MISS DIG 811?
MISS DIG 811 is a free service that locates underground utilities so homeowners and contractors can avoid damaging them. MISS DIG 811 coordinates with local utility companies who come to your home to mark lines for gas, electricity, water, sewer and telecommunications before digging projects begin.
Why have utilities marked?
Having underground utilities marked before digging is required by law. Safety is the primary reason; damaging a utility line could result in injury or death. A second reason is cost. Damaged utilities cost billions each year. Plus, homeowners who dig without marking utility lines and cause damage may be held responsible for repairs and face significant fines.
When should you have utilities marked?
Homeowners should have their utilities marked before beginning any digging, no matter how big or small the project. This includes when installing decks, fences, lampposts, landscaping and drainage around your home.
Submit requests to MISS DIG 811 at least three days before digging.
How to contact MISS DIG 811
Homeowners can request utility marking two ways: Either call 811 or submit a request online.
Safely digging around paint or flags
Utilities use paint or flags to mark where underground utilities are located. The safe zone for digging with any type of equipment starts four feet on either side of the markers. The caution zone is within four feet of the markers where hand digging must be used. Keep in mind that the utility line may be located within 18 inches of either side of the markers.
Using MISS DIG is free, easy to use and will help keep you safe. Have your underground utilities marked before you dig, every time you dig.
