Home appliance buying tips

When buying a new range, refrigerator, washer, dryer or dishwasher, plan ahead so you can make a smart money move.

Measure twice, buy once

A great deal on a major appliance isn’t such a great deal if you get it home and find out it won’t fit! Measure both the space the appliance will occupy, as well as doorways and hallways it will have to fit through. Also, take into account hallways that make a sharp turn.

Planned replacement

Plan to replace your appliances when they are on their last leg rather than when they completely fail. This way you can take time to comparison shop and wait for a sale. You’ll get a better deal than if you have to make an emergency purchase.

Figure the full price

When comparison shopping, ask about delivery and installation fees. Ask if additional parts are required for installation and how much they’ll cost.

If you’re switching from an electric to a gas range, factor in the cost for a licensed contractor, too.

Get extra protection

Before you agree to pay for an additional warranty, find out if your credit card offers extra protection. When you use your Consumers Mastercard debit card, Low Rate credit or Rewards credit card, you automatically get these two benefits:

  • A 12-month extension on the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Price protection for 60 days following your purchase. Mastercard will pay you the difference if you see the item advertised at a lower price.

I liked that you had mentioned that it can be important to get extra protection on the appliances to make sure that you can get the most out of your purchase. My wife and I have been putting a kitchen in our new home and we’re needing appliances to fill it in with and we weren’t sure how to fully handle it. We’ll have to start looking around for appliances that are selling in our area and once we find some, we’ll be sure to get the extra protection on it.
