Fun things to do across West Michigan for spring break.
Staying home for spring break? Have no fear of missing out on fun—you’re on staycation! West Michigan has an abundance of things to do for everyone from animal lovers and artists to adventurers and foodies. Discover local places to visit and fun activities you can do at home.
Attention, animal lovers!
Our region is home to several zoos and nature centers where you can observe, interact with, and be fascinated by other species. Visit them at:
- John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids. This year, John Ball Zoo’s newest exhibit will bring pygmy hippos and a state-of-the-art habitat to West Michigan.
- Potter Park Zoo in Lansing is the place to get acquainted with an Arctic fox, rhinos, bongos and many more species.
- The Critter Barn in Zeeland features many farm animals such as rabbits, chickens, goats and pigs. In some cases, you can hold, pet, cuddle and feed the animals.

Prepare for takeoff
The Air Zoo in Portage is an exciting space of dynamic discovery with aviation exhibits and full-motion flight simulators, indoor amusement park rides and science-based camps and classes.
Set sail for the Michigan Maritime Museum
The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven has a week of drop-in family fun activities for all ages, April 3-7. Each day has a different theme and Spring Break activities are included with general admission. Additionally, the museum also features year-round free admission for educators with a school ID.
Calling all Picassos and Fridas
Spring break is the perfect time to take a leisurely stroll through one or more art museums. Get inspired by the collections at these regional art museums:
- Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph
- Muskegon Museum of Art
- Grand Rapids Art Museum, be sure to check out events calendar
While not in West Michigan, the Detroit Institute of Arts is worth a day trip. There, you will be greeted by Rodin’s The Thinker, and can take in the awe of Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals and numerous other exhibits.
There’s no place like home
With a bit of preparation, you can have tons of fun at home. Consider the following activities to make your staycation memorable:
- Host a mystery party. My Mystery Party offers non-murder games, including titles such as Daunting Diamond Thievery, Turmoil at the Talent Show and Pajama Party Pandemonium.
- Aloha! Break out the tiki torches, leis, and grass skirts for luau time! Maui Luau has some great tips for your next Hawaiian Luau party.

- Take your tastebuds on a tour with an international dinner. Food Network has a collection of 30 international meals designed for weeknight dinners, so they won’t take too much time to prepare.
