Here’s news you can use in a constantly changing business environment, including how to get part of $100 million in grants for Michigan small businesses; solutions for working parents with kids going back to school part-time; and ways organizations can effectively fight racial injustice.

  1. $100 million in grants for small business — The Michigan Strategic Fund authorized the Michigan Small Business Restart Program to help our state’s small businesses recover from the economic fallout from the COVID-19 crisis with $100 million in grants. The funds will be distributed through local or nonprofit economic development organizations like Southwest Michigan First, Lakeshore Advantage and The Right Place. Applications accepted through August 5; get more details.
  2. Working parents: what back-to-school could look like — As schools announce their reopening plans, many with part-time schedules, parents with jobs and businesses are seeking solutions. Some parents are looking to hire in-home tutors, while other moms and dads will turn to school co-ops, babysitting co-ops and market-based solutions. Get the whole story.
  1. Empty gestures won’t change racism but leadership can — Public relations won’t change injustice but organizations that want to demonstrate equity and inclusion can use these six ways to put words into action. And, individuals can use the LEAP framework to become a better ally to their black colleagues.
  1. Why employees don’t speak their mind — When employees won’t share insights, businesses miss opportunities. Find out the five reasons people don’t contribute solutions, suggest micro-innovations or advocate for customers.
  1. Older entrepreneurs thriving during the pandemic — Some businesses are booming these days because of growing demand for particular products and services. Read three success stories of people over age 50 whose businesses have adapted and thrived this year.
